Unfortunately I did not have the best experience with Danny Allen and I left the appointment feeling more worried and anxious than I was before seeing him. I have never seen a psychiatrist before and was very nervous to what the appointment would entail. Upon joining the video call he didn’t say hello to me and didn’t explain who he was and what experience I’d had with a psychiatrist before. It was very clear he hadn’t read my very lengthy ADHD report which captured much of the information we then spent 40 minutes discussing around my mental health. I find the lack of preparation incredibly disappointing considering the cost of the hour session. The purpose of my consultation with Danny Allen was for me to understand what medication I could take for my diagnosis of ADHD. I also have panic disorder and anxiety which is currently medicated - I wanted to discuss with him my worries and options regarding next steps. Throughout my conversation with Danny Allen I felt he made comments throughout that made me feel embarrassed. He commented that I had “whizzed” onto another question without letting him answer the first question raised. I found this an interesting use of words considering the purpose of seeing him was due to a diagnosis of ADHD which is currently unmedicated. Due to the nature of my condition I am often forgetful and went back to a comment I had made to expand further in the hope I wouldn’t forget. He responded by answering my question “well I did just answer that 5 minutes ago, but” again, quite patronising with no recognition of my condition. I didn’t feel throughout the appointment that I could expand on my worries or provide additional information to the direct questions he was asking without being told I was digressing. He mocked throughout the conversation professionals that had supported and ‘medicated’ me, including my GP and made conclusions throughout the appointment without drawing on clear facts. He lacked empathy, compassion and I felt nervous and on edge throughout my appointment. I didn’t feel listened to and therefore the recommendations raised from the appointment I cannot fully trust. I would not recommend Danny Allen to anyone else at this time.

Response from Dr Danny Allen

Thank you so much for these kind words. The environment we shared was very harsh and I am so pleased that I managed to do some good. I wish you all the best.

I was referred to Dr Allen by my GP seven years ago. Since that time, Dr Allen has helped me enormously. Meeting him on my first visit was a very easy and reassuring experience, I found him to be easy to talk to and non-judgemental. He listened carefully before making any conclusions or giving advice on my health matters which he took very seriously indeed, I found this aspect of his approach very reassuring. He has true expertise; with his ability to subtly guide he empowered and inspired me to take control of what turned out to be a complex and quite unique mental illness that had developed suddenly in a stressful work situation. I had previously, for a short time been under the care of another psychiatrist whom I felt did not believe my symptoms or try to understand them and who was trying to force me to take a route I knew was wrong for me. From my first meeting with Dr Allen, I knew that not only did Dr Allen believe my symptoms but more importantly that he believed in me. Through Dr Allen's insightful expertise and gently suggestive approach I came to understand my illness. Throughout my treatment Dr Allen encouraged me to take a fully active part in decisions relating to medication and therapy. At a time when you cannot always trust yourself or those closest to you, I have no doubt that his approach to the treatment of my illness built me back up. With Dr Allen's help I discovered my own simple, practical coping strategy. I'm delighted to say that for the last several years I've led an active and challenged life again including public speaking, without medication or therapy. I've never felt happier. I'm now more aware then ever of how precious and fragile our mental health is. I feel truly blessed to have been under the care of Dr Allen at such a critical time in my life.
